If you’re an airplane passenger, you know that turning off airplane mode can help conserve energy and save your battery. But what if you don’t have to turn off airplane mode every time you want to fly? What if you only need to do it when your plane is in a specific airspace or when there’s a specific flight plan? In that case, there’s no need to worry about turning off airplane mode. You can permanently disable it on Windows 10 by using the following steps:
- Open the Settings app and click on the General tab.
- Under Airplane Mode, select the option that corresponds to your airline or travel plan: “Off” if you’re not using airplane mode, “Always On” if you always need to turn it on, or “Never On” if you never want to use it.
- Click on OK and close the Settings app.
Airplane mode disables all wireless communication, including Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. When you want to connect to a network, you’ll need to turn off airplane mode. Here are a few ways to do it on Windows 10.
Turn Off Airplane Mode From the Notifications Menu
One of the quickest ways to turn off airplane mode is by using the Notifications menu option. In the Windows 10 system tray, click the “Text Bubble” icon to open the Notifications menu.
In the Notifications menu, click the “Airplane Mode” option to toggle it to Off. If the button is light gray, airplane mode is off.
Turn Off Airplane Mode From the Settings App
You can also turn off airplane mode from the Settings app. Instead of navigating through several levels of the Settings app, just type “Airplane mode” in the Windows Search bar and then click “Turn Airplane Mode On or Off” from the search results.
The Airplane Mode options will open in the Settings app. Under “Airplane Mode,” toggle the switch to the Off position to turn airplane mode off.
How to Permanently Disable Airplane Mode
If you don’t travel, you may want to just permanently disable airplane mode to prevent accidentally turning it on. Don’t worry; this isn’t permanent in the sense that you can never use airplane mode on your PC again. It only prevents you from turning airplane mode on using the options listed above. However, you can run a command to re-enable the ability to turn on/off airplane mode again later.
First, open Command Prompt as an admin by searching “Command Prompt” in the Windows Search bar, right-clicking “Command Prompt” in the search results, and then click “Run as Administrator” in the context menu.
Next, run this command:
A success message will be returned if the operation was executed successfully.
Restart your Windows 10 PC for the changes to take place. Once you reboot your PC, you’ll still see Airplane Mode as an option in both the Notifications menu and Settings app, but you won’t be able to toggle either one of them to the On position.
If at some point you want to re-enable airplane mode, just run this command in Command Prompt:
The change is immediate, so you don’t need to restart your PC. You can now turn on airplane mode again.
Now you know how to turn off or permanently disable airplane mode on Windows 10. If you’ve upgraded to Windows 11, then we’ve got you covered there, too.
